Yesterday, 25 November 2021 on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the 16 Days of Action against Domestic Abuse campaign commenced.
This is a worldwide campaign which focuses on all aspects of domestic abuse to raise awareness that anyone can be a victim of this crime, regardless of gender, age, religion, ethnicity or sexuality and to express solidarity for victims and survivors.
The campaign runs from 25 November 2021 and concludes on Human Rights Day on 10 December 2021. The eradication of domestic abuse involves everyone and across the 16 Days, domestic abuse charities and agencies will be holding events and providing insight and information to educate individuals further and spread awareness.
The launch of the campaign follows on from the recent Office of National Statistics figures which were released on 24 November 2021 which record that there were 845,734 domestic abuse related crimes in England and Wales in the year ending March 2021. This is an increase of 6% from the year prior.
According to the figures, the number of calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline in England increased by 22% compared with the year before.
Raising awareness continues to be crucial and, as we saw in a recent Freedom of Information request from police authorities up and down the country, it isn’t just physical violence. The statistics show that in Devon and Cornwall coercive control cases have risen by 789 per cent in five years.
