Whether you are a leading politician, a captain of industry, a search and rescue pilot or even a King in waiting, there is no denying that parenthood is one of the most demanding and rewarding challenges that you are likely to face. This is something that is all too apparent to Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.
Speaking in his first interview since the birth of his son, Prince William stated – “Catherine and now little George are my priorities… and Lupo!” He also commented on the impact that becoming a father has had on him- “…it’s only been a short period, but a lot of things affect me differently now.” Of course he isn’t in it alone, Catherine, has obviously been doing more that her fair share. When discussing ‘little George’s’ night-time antics William was quick to praise her for taking care of the majority of the night-time wake-ups – “She’s doing a fantastic job”.
He went on to describe the “emotional experience” that they have had in recent weeks and his eagerness to impart a legacy on young Prince George and share, in particular his love of wildlife.
The most pivotal part of this story, at least from my perspective, was the importance that the Prince placed on his role as a father and a husband. He is clearly determined to do as much as possible himself.
“Where I can be, I am as independent as I want to be. The same as Catherine and Harry,” .
When talking about the moment that he placed Prince George’s car seat into the back of their Range Rover and drove his family away from the hospital he explained “Driving your son and your wife away from hospital was really important to me.” In that moment, he wasn’t a Prince or and RAF officer, he was a man with responsibilities and a family that he needed to look after.
Parenthood of course lasts a lifetime, not just until the children turn 18. Nurturing, offering guidance and support is a parent’s responsibility forever. Sadly in many cases the role of a parent will outlast the relationship between mother and father. As family law specialists we are often confronted with cases of relationship breakdown, where children are involved. In these cases it is our responsibility to try and help that couple put the needs of their children above everything else, and create a situation that allows them to work together effectively as parents.
