For our Everyday Bravery video series, Managing Partner at East Devon Law Ian Hunt shares his story of times he has had to dig deep to find his courage. Ian had a stroke at 28 and wasn’t expected to live. He lost the ability to speak properly and developed processing problems, but still needed to go to work.
His post-stroke limitations changed the way people treated him – despite him being the same person as before. But Ian found strength and inner courage which helped him not to worry what other people thought.
We asked Ian to use his experiences to describe what everyday bravery means to him. It’s a concept that varies from person to person, but for Ian it is the bravery to believe in yourself and have the courage of your convictions to not only stand up for your rights but also the rights of other people.
At The Family Law Company, our work is inextricably linked to relationships: we build them, nurture them, and frequently support our clients to navigate their complexities. Bravery in relationships means not only fully embracing them, but also means recognising when to set boundaries, ensuring respect, mutual understanding, and long-term connections.
It takes everyday bravery to choose to face problems head-on, stand up for what’s right, and set healthy limits in our relationships. It’s about having faith in yourself, even when the way ahead looks uncertain or scary. This kind of bravery leads to respect, understanding, and real connections that last.
If you know someone who lives this kind of bravery then we’d love you to nominate them as we search for everyday brave people in our community to celebrate: Everyday Bravery – The Family Law Co
