Specialist family lawyer can now represent both parties in a divorce

Joint Managing Director of The Family Law Company, Rachel Buckley has recently completed specialist training that enables her to support couples looking to avoid a hostile divorce through a progressive method reportedly used by Manchester City Football Club manager Pep Guardiola and his wife Cristina Serra.

Known as Resolution Together, this approach promotes a more amicable route to divorce by offering a ‘one lawyer, two clients’ model. Instead of each party hiring separate solicitors, one specially trained lawyer guides both individuals through the process together.

Alongside the no-fault divorce legislation introduced in 2022, this option facilitates a less stressful, more cooperative way for couples to part ways and move forward with clarity and mutual respect.

Rachel explains: “One of the things I’ve always been passionate about is that divorce shouldn’t have to be a battle. The traditional model often pits spouses against each other, with each lawyer focused solely on their own client’s interests. That can drive up costs, anxiety, and unnecessary conflict.

“To be able to offer this more collaborative, smoother approach will be a real benefit for many of The Family Law Company’s clients.”

The Resolution Together method helps couples reach a fair and efficient outcome by:

  • Resolving financial matters while ensuring a fair division of assets
  • Avoiding the need to go to court
  • Minimising costs by working with a single legal expert
  • Streamlining the process and reducing conflict
  • Shielding children from potential acrimony.

For Pep Guardiola and Cristina Serra, together for 30 years and married for 10, this approach may allow them to handle complex financial matters calmly and practically, while protecting their wealth and privacy.

But Rachel is quick to point out that it’s not just for the rich and famous: “While this is ideal for high-profile couples like Pep and Cristina, it’s just as relevant for any couple who want a clear, fair, and respectful way to divorce. It’s more cost-effective, reduces the stress of back-and-forth between lawyers, and promotes cooperation rather than confrontation.”

Approaches like this are increasingly favoured by the courts. Since April 2024, divorcing couples are strongly encouraged to attempt non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) before proceeding to court. Judges now have the authority to order couples to engage in NCDR and may impose financial penalties on those who bypass this step.

Rachel’s new qualification strengthens The Family Law Company’s long-standing commitment to offering constructive alternatives to litigation, helping clients reduce conflict, save money, and move on with dignity.
